AWC Attends Project Launch Debriefing for `;Strengthening Climate Resilience through Flood and Drought Management in Central Asia`; in Kyrgyz Republic 

On June 7, 2024, the Asia Water Council (AWC) attended the opening of the Global Green Growth Initiative`;s (GGGI) new office in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, and the project launch briefing for the `;Strengthening Climate Resilience through Flood and Drought Management in Central Asia`; project. The event, held at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce building, was hosted by the Minister of Economy and Commerce, Danyar Amangeldiyev.

The $10.7 million `;Strengthening Climate Resilience through Flood and Drought Management in Central Asia`; project, supported by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea, will be implemented in the Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan, specifically in the Talas-Alatau and Fergana Mountains.

The project aims to strengthen the climate and disaster resilience of vulnerable communities through integrated and effective water management technologies. The project plans to support the creation of green jobs and improve income generation in the region. It will pilot an innovative early warning system that combines flood management, smart water pumping, and floodgates to support the four million people living in the region, maintain natural capital, and create new green jobs.

(&ldquo;The Kyrgyz Republic is already experiencing the effects of climate change through more frequent and severe floods, droughts, and other disasters,&rdquo; said Minister of Economy and Trade Daniyar Amangeldiyev. &ldquo;We welcome this important project as a solution to build community resilience. Through close collaboration with project partners, we will be able to develop the policies and technologies needed to adapt to climate change."

GGGI President & Chair, Ban Ki-moon remarked, &ldquo;The opening of this Country Office marks a major step forward in the shared dedication between GGGI and the Kyrgyz Government to jointly develop and implement sustainable green growth strategies. As you know well, achieving sustainable development is a marathon&mdash;not a sprint&mdash;that requires continued dedication, innovation, and&mdash;above all&mdash;collaboration.&rdquo;)

For project implementation in the Kyrgyz Republic, AWC will work with GGGI and the Korean Public Procurement Service (KEP), and the partnership will help deliver climate-resilient water infrastructure that can help manage floods in priority areas
